1. What Triggers a Futures Liquidation?

In cryptocurrency perpetual futures and margin trading, you borrow capital from an exchange (e.g. Binance, Bybit) to open positions larger than your collateral balance. When leverage is used, the exchange requires you to maintain a minimum collateral threshold known as the Maintenance Margin Ratio (MMR).

If adverse market price movements cause your remaining equity to fall below the maintenance margin requirement, the exchange's risk engine forcibly closes your position via automated market orders to prevent negative account balances. This is liquidation.

2. The Exact Liquidation Price Formulas

For an isolated margin position with entry price \(P_e\), leverage multiplier \(L\), and exchange maintenance margin rate \(MMR\) (typically 0.4%–0.5% on major pairs):

Long Position Liquidation Price:
P_liq = P_e Γ— [ 1 βˆ’ (1 Γ· L) + MMR ]
Short Position Liquidation Price:
P_liq = P_e Γ— [ 1 + (1 Γ· L) βˆ’ MMR ]

Notice that higher leverage contracts your margin of error exponentially: at 50x leverage, a mere 1.5% adverse price fluctuation triggers total loss of collateral.

3. Cross Margin vs. Isolated Margin

Isolated Margin: Restricts collateral risk strictly to the specific initial margin allocated to that individual position. If Bitcoin experiences a wicked wicking event, only the allocated margin is lost; the remainder of your futures wallet remains untouched.

Cross Margin: Shares your entire wallet balance across all open positions. While this provides a deeper liquidity buffer and pulls your liquidation price further away, an unmitigated adverse trend or flash crash will completely wipe out your entire account balance.
